Now that we’ve entered the new year, it’s time to make some resolutions for you and your car. Continue reading for some vital maintenance tasks that will set you on course for a smooth year.

Car Maintenance Checklist for 2021 — And Beyond

Replace Fluids and Filters

Many of your car’s systems rely on adequate levels of fluids, which need to be routinely checked, topped off, or replaced. Oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and wiper fluid are a few examples you’ll need to maintain to ensure your car runs smoothly.

One way to extend the life of these fluids is to regularly clean or replace the filters because they act as a first defense against dirt, grime, or other contaminants. If you’re unsure of how to check or replace these fluids or filters, then the first task on your maintenance checklist is to schedule a routine inspection so a technician can take care of this for you.

Rotate Tires and Align Wheels

The responsiveness of your car’s steering, braking, driver-assistance technologies, and drivetrain all rely heavily on the health of your tires. Here in the midst of winter it’s vital that you inspect, rotate, or even replace your tires to ensure your car can maintain performance and keep you safe on the road.

The air within your tires will compress as the temperature outside plummets, and that means you should check to ensure your tire pressure never gets too low. Underinflated tires could cause significant damage and inhibit your ability to brake. Likewise, if your tires are threadbare, they’ll likely be useless on icy winter roads. If your tires are in good condition, schedule an appointment to have your tires rotated and your wheels aligned. This will extend the life of your tires and improve handling.

Deep Clean and Apply a Wax

Give your car a fresh start by detailing both the interior and exterior. Salt from icy roads can wreak havoc on the paint and undercarriage of your car, so a deep clean followed by a protective wax layer is necessary. Likewise, salt can make your exterior lights dull. Use an abrasive cleaner to remove any buildup from your headlights and taillights.
